We're bringing nature back into your city.
Ninebark is a Calgary, Canada based non-profit organization dedicated to improving city green space.
Our elevator pitch? We want to improve urban areas for everyone by strategically planting trees and shrubs that will survive and thrive in Calgary's harsh climate. We take donations and use the money to buy plants and supplies to make sure they stay healthy in their new homes in parks, schools, low-income neighbourhoods, and more. That simple.
A new set of modern environmental issues face our cities, and we believe that integrating nature can help to solve them. We want to see our great Canadian cities live up to their potential, for the people of today and generations to come.
01
PROBLEM: Lack of high quality, accessible public third places (not work or home); this increases social isolation and reduces outdoor recreation.
SOLUTION: Natural areas = better third places where people want to visit and stay; increased social and recreational opportunities as well as economic activity.

02
PROBLEM: Less tree canopy coverage leading to hotter neighbourhoods and skyrockets your electricity bills.
SOLUTION: Large trees cool down the street and homes by several degrees, making streets and patios more pleasant while also saving you money on electricity bills.
03
PROBLEM: Increase in excess noise, dust, and atmospheric pollutants; leading to an uptick in environmental allergies and other health issues.
SOLUTION: Plants reduce noise, vibration, and pollutants from sources such as traffic and construction.

04
PROBLEM: Increased costs of watering and maintenance for standard lawns.
SOLUTION: Established trees and shrubs require far less water and maintenance than a traditional
lawn--larger trees shade lawns to cut watering needs--all saving you money in the long run.
05
PROBLEM: Increased cost of and reduced access to fresh food.
SOLUTION: Certain plants have high fruit or nut yields even in Canada's harsh climate; saving families money and providing fresh, nutritious food.

06
PROBLEM: Local environmental degradation.
SOLUTION: Plants soak up and store carbon while providing habitat for local wildlife.
07
PROBLEM: No local character or beauty; everywhere starts to look the same.
SOLUTION: Trees and shrubs can lend massive character and charm to a neighbourhood; our cities have so much local flavour to offer and shouldn't look like every other place in North America.
